You're Not Supposed to Have All the Answers

Open Bible on a white fabric surface, highlighted by sunlight. Notes and underlined text are visible, creating a studious, peaceful mood.

Have you ever thought to yourself:

  • "Why haven't I figured it out yet?"

  • "Why am I still stuck at this level?"

  • "I thought I was done struggling with this—yet it's coming up again"?

If those frustrations sound familiar, this conversation is for you.

You are not supposed to have all the answers. You were never responsible to have it all perfectly figured out.

Maybe that hit you. Maybe you feel that in your body, there's an emotional response bubbling up because of knowing that truth, but struggling to believe it.

In this post, we're going to unpack what is yours to hold, what's yours to release, and why.

When you master this, you are going to experience a level of fulfillment and contentment that you did not believe possible. But it's yours. It's your inheritance as a follower of Christ.

You Are Not Designed to Operate Apart from God

Some pretty good news, right?

You are not created with complete independence and self-sufficiency in mind.

You're not behind. You're not broken. You're not failing.

You are in fact human, fallen short of the glory of God.

The Struggle of High Performers

The clients that I work with here at Grace Space Christian Coaching are high performers. They're capable, effective, efficient, and they experience significant growth and operate with speed.

And when snags arise, it feels like a personal indictment on your value, your worthiness, and your capability.

So what if this feeling that you experience all too often—probably every day or multiple times a day—this feeling of falling short — what if that's not a defect, but in fact, part of God's glorious design?

The Sovereign Self

Recently I was at church and the pastor shared this concept of the sovereign self.

The sovereign self being the way in which our culture operates, the way that we operate—is that we equate self-sufficiency with success.

Isn't that the truth?

He called operating with this level of independence "the sovereign self."

And if we know the Bible, we know that sovereignty is a quality of God. Sovereignty means having supreme authority, power, and control—something that we were never meant to have.

That's not ours to hold, but it's God's to carry. And part of why we worship Him.

The pastor went on further with this quote where he said:

"The sovereign self is glorifying rebellion from God."

Let me repeat that.

The sovereign self glorifies rebellion from God.

Doesn't that hit you physically? Don't you feel that? There's a sadness. There's a conviction. And it's a good thing.

When You're Feeling Responsible for It All

So when you are feeling responsible for it all, take that as an indication that you may be glorifying self.

I see you. I get you. You want to live with excellence.

But where are you perhaps relying too heavily on your own strength when the best choice is to go to God in prayer and to be led by Him?

Consider asking the question when you are in that hard space, when you're feeling like everything is dependent on you:

"God, what do you want me to know, to see, to do about this challenge?"

Scripture for You

Proverbs 3:5-6:

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."

It doesn't say YOU will figure it all out. You will create the map and He will give you the green light.

He will make your path straight.

Isaiah 26:3:

"You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You because he trusts in You."

There is a theme here, isn't there?

Trust.

Questions to Consider

  • What would it look like to trust in God?

  • What would it look like to rely on Him? To seek Him?

  • Are we focused on our ways, our ideas? Or are we focused on His power, His strength, His guidance?

  • Are we trusting in our own capability or in His strength and His plan?

What Coaching Is All About

This is what coaching is all about:

  • Taking thoughts captive

  • Unpacking what is actually at play

  • Calling out the hard truth

  • Seeking Him and surrendering to Him

And through these practices, through doing this regularly, diligently, and with depthyou create more breathing room, space, and the capability to in fact carry what He is calling you to.

The Bottom Line

Self-sufficiency is not what creates success, but surrender is.

You're not behind. You're not broken. You're not failing.

You are not designed to operate apart from God.

And when you master understanding what is yours to hold and what's yours to release, you will experience a level of fulfillment and contentment that you did not believe possible.

Yet.. it's yours. It's your inheritance as a follower of Christ.
