God-Centered Goal Setting for Christian Business Owners

MacBook Pro, green iced drink, notebook and pen on a tidy desk; planner reads TODAY IS A New day.

Last week, we talked about building a God-centered life and business without burnout and the importance of surrender over striving.

Today, we're going deeper into how to actually set goals as a Christian business owner that fulfill your God-given purpose.

This isn't just about goal setting. It's about goal setting that is guided by God.

What Are You Good At?

Imagine being asked to name something you're good at in front of a room of people.

For many of us, it's uncomfortable. We downplay it. We assume everyone's good at that thing. It feels so natural and second nature that we don't even recognize it as a gift.

But here's the thing—what you're good at matters.

The Parable of the Talents

Matthew 25 tells the story of the parable of the talents. Some individuals invest and use their talents and multiply them. But one person hides their talents from fear.

And that person is condemned for being wicked and lazy.

Matthew 5 tells us: "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden."

So here's the question:

What would it look like to showcase what God has deposited in you for His good and for His glory?

The Monet Example

Think about the impressionist artist Monet. His work is so beautiful.

But what if instead of pouring into his craft, Monet fixated on the fact that he wasn't a star football player? What if he spent all his time and energy trying to get better at football?

That doesn't make sense, right?

If you are gifted in something, what would it look like to exponentially increase in that area?

What would it look like to tend your time, efforts, and energy to that?

Wouldn't that have a more significant payoff than trying to fix your weaknesses?

Understanding How God Wired You

In Grace Space Christian Coaching's Growth Without Burnout signature program, Phase 1 is all about building biblical beliefs.

Part of this module is understanding how God wired you and then beginning to operate in light of that.

We don't build based on what you're seeing other people do or what you think you should do.

We build based on what God has created you to do.

Two Steps to God-Honoring Goals

Step 1: Acknowledge Your Gifts

Take some time and think about this: What are you good at? What is that thing?

Ask the people around you—at work, family, friends. See what themes come up. Sometimes we need outside perspective to recognize our gifts.

Step 2: Get Curious About What Serves Your People Best

One of the most powerful quotes is this:

"Your purpose lies where the world's greatest need and your greatest passion intersect." - Viktor Frankl

Think about one way that you can bless someone this week. Then do what you need to do to make it happen.

A Faith-Based Exercise: The Fruit of the Spirit

It's not just the what you do, but the how you do it that matters.

Consider the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

As you are doing good work, what fruit of the Spirit will you aim to embody?

Let that guide and direct how you show up.

Christian-Based Breathwork

Here's a simple practice you can do anytime:

Inhale: "Jesus"

Exhale: "I trust you"

Consider... when you let God lead, how might your day-to-day look and feel different?

Building from Overflow, Not Scarcity

Maybe you're struggling with insecurity or not feeling like you're ever going to get to the level you're hoping for.

What if, instead of building from a place of what feels like not enough, you build from the overflow?

That's the difference between building on God's foundation versus building on your own strength.

What Really Matters

Pastor Francis Chan said: "Our greatest fear should not be of failure, but of succeeding at things in life that don't really matter."

What matters is something that is rooted in Christ, not rooted in comparison.

Goal setting that is guided by God looks different. It's not about what you think you should do. It's about what God has created you to do.

This is a thoughtful reminder that God-centered goals begin with recognizing the gifts He has placed within us and using them to serve others with purpose. Building from overflow instead of scarcity brings peace and direction. Whether in business, ministry, or creating personalized clothing patches, honoring God through our talents allows us to make a meaningful impact while reflecting His love and grace in everything we do.
