Changing Your Life from the Inside Out | Interview with Dr. Kelsey Hawk

Christian Life coach client with Grace Space Christian Coaching

What if you could pick up a new map and chart a completely different direction for your life?

Today I'm sharing an interview with Dr. Kelsey Hawk, a licensed mental health counselor, author, and educator who has been serving clients for over 20 years. Kelsey has been in private practice since 2016 and is passionate about helping people recognize that they already contain all they need to heal.

Most recently, Kelsey authored the book Dare to Believe: Changing Your Life from the Inside Out, and after reading it, I knew I had to bring her on the podcast to share her wisdom with you.

Highlights of what we chatted about:

The Power of Your Map

You may have been handed a certain map in life that tells you which way to go and how to think, act, or feel.

But here's the good news: At any point along the journey, you have the power to pick up a new map and chart a different direction.

Good Maps vs. Bad Maps

Good maps teach children they are:

  • Loved

  • Safe

  • Valued

  • Guided

Bad maps teach that:

  • Needs don't matter

  • Love is painful

  • Emotions are dangerous

Belief Is an Act of Inner Defiance

Viktor Frankl, author of Man's Search for Meaning, shares this powerful truth:

"Belief is not blind optimism. It's an act of inner defiance against despair."

Kelsey speaks more to this concept and how it applies to transforming your life from the inside out.

Your Brain's Wiring for Congruence

Our brains are wired for consistency and congruence. This is fascinating because science mirrors what the Bible says about the power of the tongue.

Proverbs tells us: "Life and death are in the power of the tongue."

Kelsey shares her favorite faith-based beliefs to adopt and integrate quickly and effectively:

  • "I walk in favor"

  • "People want and need what I have to offer"

  • "I have an abundance of time, energy, protection, resources, wisdom, and love for every good work"

  • "There is always a solution for everything I am facing"

Being Mission-Driven

Kelsey shares a powerful story from The Lord of the Rings where one of the characters is convinced he can't go on, yet he does.

Not because he's certain of success, but because he believes in the power of his mission.

We explore what it means to move forward with purpose.

The Thoughts-Feelings-Behaviors Loop

One of the most transformational concepts in Dare to Believe is understanding how your thoughts create your feelings, which create your behaviors.

Kelsey walks through examples of both negative and positive loops so you can grasp how this plays out in real life—and how to shift it.

Neural Networks and Visualization

Your brain's neural networks are strengthened by years of repetition. When your brain defaults to the familiar, it needs direction to know where to go instead.

And when you vividly visualize your new belief, your brain begins seeing it as true.

Kelsey shares stories from her own experience and her clients' experiences about how this works in practice.

The Bottom Line

You already contain everything you need to heal. Your beliefs shape your reality.

Belief is an act of inner defiance against despair... it's not blind optimism.

Your brain prefers consistency and is wired for congruence.

Being mission-driven means moving forward not because you're certain of success, but because you believe in the power of your mission.

And when you vividly visualize your new belief, your brain begins seeing it as true.
